As many of you know this weekend marks the first anniversary of the tragic accident, which took a Mariner from us. On Saturday the 6th of June 2009 Charlie “Water Boy” Scanlon a University exchange student from Ohio USA fell to his death from a waterfall at Devils Thumb Mountain north of Mossman.

Whilst with the club Charlie became a well liked and respected member of our little community being involved in both on the field and off the field activities. He was better known as “Water Boy” due to his aggressive tackling style, which would put more experienced players to shame. In his short time with us I hope he learned to love the game as we do and to see a side of an amateur sporting organization that many out there would not experience.

We at the club have over the past few seasons have seen players from all corners of the globe come and play Rugby with us. We welcome them whole-heartedly and enjoy watching them become Mariners before their journey continues back home. Charlie is still sadly missed by the club and by the friends he made whilst here.

In memory of Water Boy, the number 11 jerseys from both grades won’t be worn on the paddock for our games against Southside to acknowledge a lost Mariner. I would like to see every club member past and present to be at Friday’s match so we can have a minute’s silence prior to the kick off for Reserve Grade.

Rest in Peace.
