Match Report: Reserve Grade vs Wanderers

By August 1, 2009Match Report

After a stern wake up call from Barron, JCU needed to get back on track and fine tune some of their game tactics. During the week the boys had talked about the intensity needed to win the finals and through out the week made extra efforts to improve on that. We worked hard on our defence which was visibly absent the week before and also talked about ball security another section of the game which has let us down during the season.

Come Saturday reserve grade was ready to put all our efforts into practice. Still far from a full strength side JCU started well, holding a very determined wanderers outfit off our line for the first 10 minutes. JCU knuckled down and stuck to the game plan and it wasn’t long before the mariners crossed the line.

thanks to their part time front rower slash coach, Alex Costello. JCU continued steadily, adding 3 more tries and conceiving only one, half time score ending up 17-7.

Despite having the better first half, JCU once again failed to carry that intensity forward into the second half. Weather or not it was the tired legs or the slippery surface, JCU found it hard to keep up the intensity and failed to go on and score more points. In some stages of the second half JCU found themselves in some very desperate situations defending our line a lot, trying to keep a hold of our small but important 15 point lead. At the end of the day JCU managed to get the fourth try and a bonus point to narrowly secure a win. Despite the game having a few scrappy moments, as a coach I was very happy with our defence and our ability to hold wanderers out to only one try. Final score 31 – 7.

Next week we have Southside at home, with reserve grade having a proud tradition of being undefeated at home, lets all get to training so we can finish the regular season off on a high.
