Mariners Victorious over Wanderers “Green Machine”

By August 1, 2009Match Report

Well what can I say we got the point’s. Despite the scoreboard being rather flattering to our performance I felt it was not really a true indication of our game. That being said we saw some of our boys step up, and when required we did manage to put together some really good, structured Rugby. We started the game in a bit of a daze which allowed Wanderers to put a bit of a roll on and score the first try of the match, we did strike back and managed to keep the lead for the rest of the game. Some uncharacteristic plays and mistakes did creep in. We went into half time with a handy lead.

After our little chat at half time things started to click and for the next 30 minutes or so the boys showed to all why they are within a sniff of a minor premiership and prove why we are sitting second on the ladder. Some impressive performances where put in by Mr. Reliable Shannon Mackey, Kerrod Martorella and Byron “Bonza” Mackay-Payne. At the end of the day the boys ran in 9 tries and the tempo of the game lifted once they realized that Wanderers were not going to lay down.

By the end of the game the score was 55 to 15 with a couple of boys still to come back from injury. This week we take on Port which has been put down as the first of our Finals games, mid way thru the season the team set a few goals and to date we have achieved all goals. After this week we start our finals campaign which will start in the Major Semi Final against Barron Trinity who will be looking for revenge after our last encounter.

Final Score and Scorers JCU Mariners 55 (Joey Webb 2, Scott Thompson 2, David Robinson, Oscar Fasavalu, Dion Pryor, Shannon Mackey and Brian Tauafo Tries Dion Pryor 5 conversions) Defeated Wanderers 15 (3 Tries).
