A Grade Match Report
Another Friday night match and another pleasing result for the Mariners on our charge to the semi finals. After our form over the past few weeks I must say I was feeling confident going into our match against Barron Trinity. Still missing a few of our regular First Graders we have shown great depths in our playing stocks and yet again every one stepped up to the mark.
Right from the kick off we asserted dominance in all aspects of our game. It was pleasing to see our game plan being put in to practice and with enfaces placed on in their face defense and control of the ball. Our first try came thru sheer patience and some great lead up work for Joey Webb to score out wide. Joey would score our next try to help give us a 15 to nil half time lead. There was a great sense of achievement at the break however the boys knew the job was only half done.
At the resumption of the second half Barron seemed to have lifted but our boys where up to the task of taming them. The match became a bit of an arm wrestle and as soon as we got in range we elected to take the 3 pointers to totally put their chances of a resurgence out of the equation. Our defenses held strong until a point when we found our selves down to 14 men and Barron found the try line.
All in all a good result, the boys have acknowledged there are still areas we need to work on before we get to the finals. It was great also to have a Referee up from Brisbane to officiate in our game, which is always good for our boys to see a different approach and interpretation on our great sport.
Final Score: JCU Mariners 21 (Joey Webb 2 Tries, Dion Pryor 1 Conversion and 3 Penalties) Defeated Barron Trinity Bulls 5.
